What happens if you unplug the SSD?

rootandroo

booting from a flash drive works fine, when i plug in the hdd it shows up in lsusb

oops.se

HDD can demand more current than the USB can deliver, have you look at the data for the HDD

oops.se

Well its the HDD that consumes current not the adapter

rootandroo

which is why the adapter is powered, to supply current to the HDD

7 flashes: kernel.img not found

rootandroo

i checked the hdd on my laptop and it has the kernel there, i flashed a usb drive with the same settings using the pi imager and it boots fine. only experiencing this issue with this hdd

rootandroo

are there any logs i could check from my laptop

oops.se

Then you have a bad HDD or the HDD isn't properly flashed.

rootandroo

i flashed the hdd multiple times still experiencing same issue, is there any remedy for a bad hdd

rootandroo

is it incompatible with the pi or something

oops.se

Perhaps, as Pi say "7 flashes" say what it say...

oops.se

It could be that the HDD isn't ready when Pi needs the kernel image or something. I have just used SSD's on 4 different Pi builds I have.

I think i have the same problem, thing is im not trying to boot from the hdd - im automounting it(fstab). The powered hdd seems to be unrecognized if it's on before the pi is(so my automount is out the window), so what i do is turn the pi on, then turn the external hdd power on then sudo mount -a. Idk how if booting through hdd though since you need it before you can actually do anything. Looking for a workaround for this still.
