Hi! I have a Raspberry 3b with a 7 tft that runs off the 5v pin and I need to run a 5v fan, can i just split the 5v or do i need to do something more?

k9t33n

not sure what a 7 tft is but you should just be able to plug the 5v pin into the fan

fredrichl

7 inch tft screen. It currently occupies one of the 5v pins

k9t33n

oh then you can't use the fan

k9t33n

you can't split it, though I'm sure if you plug it into the 3v pin the fan will just run slower

fredrichl

But there is two 5v pins as far as i can see?

k9t33n

k9t33n

yes their is, ive never realised that properly before

k9t33n

ok yes if the screen doesn't occupy that second 5v pin you can use that instead

oops.se

What model of TFT display?

k9t33n

oh the official one

k9t33n

cool

k9t33n

ok just checked, the display only uses one 5v pin, and you can also power it without the pins if needed

fredrichl

How do I do that?

k9t33n

it's unrecommended but if you have a 5v power supply with Dupont wires then you can just do that. you can get this stuff on Amazon

k9t33n

but it seems like you only need one 5v pin so just use that

Between the USB 5v and the 5v pin on the 40pin header is there a fuse and that is the reason behind that it is not recommended to supply the Raspberry Pi with 5v through the 40pin header

k9t33n

yes it's highly recommended to just not do that. but it is possible atleest
