RPI 3 B+ Not working. Only red light.

I powered my RPI 3 B+ with a Fast Wall Charger, Model: Q5003-US, Input: AC 100-240V.50/50Hz.0.5A Max, Output: DC 3.6-6V=3A, 6-9V=2A, 9-12V=1.5A I did some research and the RPI only needs 5V,2.5A... So, I think I fried it. But if that was the case, then why is the red light still working? I re-flashed the micro-sd, nothing. I used another micro-sd, nothing. I went back the the 5V,2A head and nothing works.

you do kinda need 5a but it should still work

k9t33n

oh researched, I'm wrong nvm

null

RPI 3B+ ?

k9t33n

for some reason I remember it needed like 3v 5a or something, idk just ignore me

k9t33n

anyway, green light means disk activity so this is probs one of 3 things

null

Which OS? How did you install the OS?

k9t33n

1. power supply 2. bad micro SD card or os 3. broken pi

k9t33n

I'm gonna trust you with 1. so lets test 2.

k9t33n

as mentioned

null

Yes, where did he mention which OS he installed and where did he install it?

k9t33n

nowhere

nopeprosonly

I tried two different OS' - Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) full and Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy, 32-bit). Before I powered it with the wall charger, I powered it with a 5V 2A power supply and it worked fine, just had the annoying warning for insufficient power and stuff. The 64-bit full worked fine before I powered it with 6V 3A

nopeprosonly

I tried 2 different micro SD cards, so I don't think its that

nopeprosonly

I used Raspberry Pi Imager v1.8.3 software to flash the micro sd card

Then a fuse may have tripped. If you're lucky, you'll just have to wait. I would leave the Pi alone until tomorrow and then try again. But if it doesn't run again then, it's probably damaged. And no, the devices are not always completely dead, but it is enough if an important component has been damaged.

k9t33n

oh you should have said it worked with a different power supply! 😭, well obviously then the current power supply is the problem

nopeprosonly

It doesnt work with a different power supply any more, but it did before I possibly blown a fuse.

nopeprosonly

I'm thinking about using the GPIO pins to power it. Although, that might not be the brightest idea.

null

Depends on the device that supplies it. The official display supplies the Pi via the GPIO. But I would let it rest until tomorrow, maybe it will settle down again.

k9t33n

yeah theres fuses within the pi which can heal themselves

nopeprosonly

Would putting it in a cold place make it faster or easier for it to heal itself?

k9t33n

im not sure, I think room temperature works just as well

nopeprosonly

So... still the same situation

k9t33n

with the power supply that broke it?

k9t33n

your gonna have to leave it to heal again if you did. we need you to use the power supply that worked

hammeraster

Might want to change your username 😅

hammeraster

Have you bought the official PSU?

k9t33n

I wouldn't even suggest that. it's over priced. you just have to get a decent quality power supply and it'll work just fine

k9t33n

I'm guessing this one isn't decent quality though

nopeprosonly

No. With a 5V 2A this time.

nopeprosonly

No...

k9t33n

oh ok. the broken power supply probs broke the pi

nopeprosonly

So its trashed?

hammeraster

Maybe give it a try.

nopeprosonly

I'll buy it, but I don't think it's going to fix anything now. I might have to just get another pi

k9t33n

yeah
