Pi400 hotspot issues

Trying to setup pi400 as access point. using bookworm and no hostapd. Trying to see if somebody has done this recently and can give me some pointers.

am iterating through various options for the band, etc. sometimes i'm able to get it to show up and connect, sometimes it wont. originally i had lan/wan on same subnet and changed that but it deosn't look like wan is giving dhcp. i also am not sure if the bookworm lite is what i should be using. i think there are a lot of contributing variables, but i do know how to add a hotspot in desktop and lite. i just can't get the cross comms
if i do auto, it still errors that a channel needs to be specified. when i manually select well known channels, when i do try to connect my pc sees the security as legacy, which is strange because i'm using normal wpa2
i think this network manager is glitchy
If you use "Raspberry Pi Imager" it shouldn't recommend Bookworm yet. And I have seen so many bugs and issues so I would use Bullseye
And I was wrong, with "Raspberry Pi Imager ver 1.8.3" it recommends Bookworm
