RPi4 Doesn't Boot

December 30, 2023, 19:25

kutuptilkisi

I got my Rpi4 and flashed my usb stick but it doesn't seem to boot at all. I tried both 2.0 and 3.0 usb ports. Doesn't work with either of them. Footage below

k9t33n

looks like a act led code

kutuptilkisi

it is blinking with a pattern of 3 short 1 long

k9t33n

k9t33n

quick question, do you have an M on the CPU?

kutuptilkisi

lets see

kutuptilkisi

nope

k9t33n

ok good

abritishthing

Wait

k9t33n

what's your os?

abritishthing

What about the thing

abritishthing

Yk the eeprom settings?

k9t33n

what thing?

abritishthing

Usb boot

abritishthing

What if it's that

k9t33n

you don't need to enable it on pi 4

abritishthing

Oh

k9t33n

only on pi 3 or below

abritishthing

Oh darn

k9t33n

pi 4 or up has usb boot by default

abritishthing

Convenient

k9t33n

yup

k9t33n

but not our problem unfortunately

k9t33n

do you have a display by chance?

abritishthing

The power supply?

kutuptilkisi

rpi os the first one on flasher

abritishthing

Oh

abritishthing

Connect a display

kutuptilkisi

i don't have a micro hdmi to hdmi converter sadly

kutuptilkisi

ig gotta buy it

k9t33n

damn, if it comes to it ssh would work fine

k9t33n

nah you just need vnc, once we get this working ofc

abritishthing

I have a moniter

k9t33n

yes, what's your power supply like?

k9t33n

well done lol.

abritishthing

It's a 45w chromebook charger

kutuptilkisi

i don't have official charger however this is one should be also enough

k9t33n

no his

abritishthing

Which is?

abritishthing

You should've said that

k9t33n

5v 3a?

kutuptilkisi

k9t33n

yup it's good

abritishthing

Try reflashing

k9t33n

let me see if your usb is good for pis, some aren't

k9t33n

yeah en the mean time try reformatting and reflashing

abritishthing

If it happens after reflashing it's the usb stick

kutuptilkisi

kutuptilkisi

it is a pretty old usb stick

kutuptilkisi

might be the reason ngl

abritishthing

Yeah

kutuptilkisi

i have this one like since

kutuptilkisi

2015 or so

abritishthing

Ok that's slow

abritishthing

It's probably why

oops.se

That is a USB that will work

k9t33n

probably is

kutuptilkisi

any ideas?

k9t33n

yeah searched it up apparently it's rare that a particular brand won't

abritishthing

Try the other usb prots

abritishthing

The ones with black rectangles

k9t33n

I'm thinking this is a broken usb tbh

abritishthing

Not blue

oops.se

The LED blink pattern suggest that theres problems with the boot media

k9t33n

he said he tried

abritishthing

Yep

abritishthing

It's toast

abritishthing

It's the usb stick

abritishthing

It's too slow

oops.se

No its not to slow

kutuptilkisi

so more likely my flash is corrupted and has dead parts

k9t33n

I couldn't find the led pattern matched with one, which pattern do you think it's following?

oops.se

That could be it. As the blink pattern suggest 3 fast 1 long isn't in the list, but the video wasn't that good.

k9t33n

do you have a completely new imager with a usb reader you know works well? it coud be these too

abritishthing

Try uh

abritishthing

Reflashing the eeprom

oops.se

But 3 blinks is a pointer to a bad USB or a corrupt image

abritishthing

If it's dead then uh

oops.se

DON'T REFLASH THE EEPROM!

abritishthing

It's the usb stick

oops.se

Why on earth should someone that can't boot reflash the EEPROM?!

kutuptilkisi

i will just go to a tech store buy a SD card and writer and we will see

k9t33n

yeah so one of the 3 things - bad imager - bad usb - bad usb reader

oops.se

Bad USB reader, naahhh. The other two yes.

k9t33n

I mean it could be

oops.se

Noop

kutuptilkisi

i used rpi imager tho

k9t33n

change that last

k9t33n

why not?

oops.se

A bad USB reader = Cant discover the USB device

k9t33n

uninstall and reinstall, might just be outdated

abritishthing

Ok then it's the rpios

oops.se

Noop

abritishthing

Ok then it's the eeprom

k9t33n

no one's saying that

k9t33n

omg

abritishthing

Fone

abritishthing

just please don't use a USB stick to boot

abritishthing

It's cursed

abritishthing

Feels wrong

oops.se

Stop giving WRONG solutions!

abritishthing

It's called I'm not really a tech expert and I don't care

abritishthing

I'm trying

abritishthing

:/

k9t33n

I swear it's not that rare for it just to be bad but not too bad so it can't discover the usb

oops.se

If you don't know the solution, stop guessing!

abritishthing

It's either the usb stick or the usb port

oops.se

Stop giving WRONG, MISSLEADING and FALSE info.

abritishthing

:/

k9t33n

usb boot is perfectly fine we just need to troubleshoot in this situation

abritishthing

So it has to be rpi os?

oops.se

NO!

oops.se

NO!

abritishthing

BRO IF YOU CANT FIGURE IT OUT THEN WHAT

abritishthing

IS

abritishthing

IT

abritishthing

WE RULED OUT EVERYTHING ELSE

k9t33n

we think we have figured it out

abritishthing

what is it

k9t33n

we just can't test

abritishthing

What if it's just

k9t33n

.

k9t33n

those aren't ruled out

abritishthing

Imager never breakks

abritishthing

So it's ruled out

k9t33n

it can

oops.se

Read the excellent advice that was given by <@1071178789939331253> and myself!

k9t33n

like I said it could just be outdated

oops.se

Yes the download of the image can be corrupted

abritishthing

Yes but it still works

abritishthing

That's what I'm trying to say

k9t33n

it's actually happened token before when I needed to uninstall and reinstall

abritishthing

The install could've been corrupted

k9t33n

if it's corrupted no

abritishthing

Rpi imager works even when outdated

k9t33n

not always

abritishthing

Bro I flashed the ubuntu 23 to my pi using a outdated version

k9t33n

like I said it's happened before to me where it's outdated and I needed to update it because it didn't work

abritishthing

Well then what could it be

k9t33n

ok??? I said not always which isn't a not never, plus this is rpios not Ubuntu

abritishthing

<@877141719735476255> what imager version are you using

abritishthing

I KNOW

abritishthing

IT CANT BOOT

abritishthing

It seems like we all have different perspectives with the same goal

k9t33n

ok I'm gonna go offline now because I got things to do and this thread is basically solved

abritishthing

Fine I'll help

kutuptilkisi

Jesus, you guys don't have to argue. I will just try it with a brand new sd card tomorrow and inform here. If it still doesn't work then we can check other options

abritishthing

Ok

k9t33n

no honestly please don't. anyway I trust <@877141719735476255> to figure this out on his own now with the knowledge we provided

k9t33n

when you use the SD card make sure to uninstall and reinstall imager it can help

oops.se

If you need any future assistance, just reach out

kutuptilkisi

<@796000224690307072>

kutuptilkisi

ACT led flashes once like every 1 secon

k9t33n

with no break?

kutuptilkisi

now

kutuptilkisi

complete off

kutuptilkisi

it didn't had a break, but a little inconsistent flashes sometimes

k9t33n

not sure if I've already asked this but does the main chip have a big M on it?

k9t33n

oh nvm I have

kutuptilkisi

i am using latest imager

k9t33n

ok good, same usb stick?

kutuptilkisi

and Samsung Evo Plus 64GB MC-MB64K

kutuptilkisi

nope

kutuptilkisi

micro sd

k9t33n

ok good

k9t33n

one second let me find out if this is a SD card that's compatible with pis

kutuptilkisi

also is it normal that rpi imager makes 2 partition out of sd card?

kutuptilkisi

like E:\ and F:\

k9t33n

not sure, I've only seen E:\ before I think

k9t33n

that SD looks compatable I think

kutuptilkisi

trying to flash it again

k9t33n

yeah

k9t33n

oh anything above 32 GB has to be reformatted so try that

kutuptilkisi

wdym by that

k9t33n

not sure why, just go to the bottom of the imager and click the clear or clean or something

k9t33n

forgot what it's called but its at the bottom

kutuptilkisi

there is nothing like that

kutuptilkisi

ah

kutuptilkisi

nvm

kutuptilkisi

you mean

kutuptilkisi

"erase"

k9t33n

yes

k9t33n

that should format it correctly

kutuptilkisi

kutuptilkisi

this is how it looks like on disk manager

kutuptilkisi

nvm

kutuptilkisi

it looks like it actually did boot

kutuptilkisi

but idk why it is not solid green but blinking instead

kutuptilkisi

i am able to ssh to pi

k9t33n

oh

k9t33n

if it's blinking that could mean there's just disk activity, I just didn't think it could be seconds at a time long

kutuptilkisi

hi from rasp pi

kutuptilkisi

i decided to use xrdp since there is no need for a hdmi cable

kutuptilkisi

but it is on us layout lol

kutuptilkisi

makes typing kinda hard

k9t33n

you can change it in the raspi config

kutuptilkisi

raspi is already on tr layout

kutuptilkisi

but xrdp is not

k9t33n

oh I see

k9t33n

I haven't xrdp before

oops.se

Yes, there is two partitions on a Raspberry Pi bootable device. 1. /boot that is a FAT filesystem and here are the boot files 2. / that is a ext4 filesystem where all other files is. And this is a normal behaviour for a Linux system

oops.se

And use 0x041F
