PI wont login after upgrading

I upgraded over 200 packages and now after reboot my RPI asks me to log in, when I do it shows a blank screen, changes cursor to X and then asks for login again

it did overwrite some config files during upgrading but idk which

was it a really old os? also did you run full-upgrade?
nah I just ran upgrade
it wasnt upgraded for months, and I also used the debian channel not rpi
because rpi had really outdated libs that would crash my programs
You should have selected "keep previous version"

i would keep all your files backed up on your pc like scripts get a new os and copy the files over that can be used on that os over to the new image
i mean an old outdated os id say is always a problem. i think its good practice to keep your system updated regurly wouldnt you?
but anyway as mentioned this sounds like a start over and learn from it kind of mistake

yup, you can get a fresh install on a different SD card maybe and copy them over. that would put you back to default settings and it's assuming the upgrade updated you to the complete newest os or Atleest close enough
screw rpi os, I will just install newest debian after copying all data

you cant even use newer cpp standards on it without static linking

no, debian has much newer ones than rpi does
Stable = Old libs, unstable = new wlibs
I had debian source on my RPI to fix this
but sadly it fucked up my rpi os as you can see
it was fine for over a year

I installed latest stable that was "tested" for raspberry pi 4
I'm gonna install ubuntu now
