So i just got a raspberri pi 4b, got an sd card set up imager and hit go in burning the card with the imager after its done i pop it in the pi and hook it up to a monitor and plug it in and it gets stuck on the opening screen, with the small raspberry, and under it is a small text Services.rescue what did i do wrong?

k9t33n

is the green light flashing in a repeating pattern?

gabrielkazansky

no only the red one is on

k9t33n

this is my new favourite troubleshooting tutorial. im gonna make sure to save this one

k9t33n

read through the website @oops.se sent and see if you can spot any problems from their first

oops.se

That is a good troubleshooting guide

k9t33n

we dont have just a general troubleshooting guide in <#1193641764330946741> yet do we?

k9t33n

im gonna make one now

oops.se

Noop and the adafruit one covers the most, don't need to write a another one

gabrielkazansky

So...no blink pattern I attached my mom's tv to see if there is video output And there is

gabrielkazansky

Is this better or worse than the blink pattern?

gabrielkazansky

This is with no SD card as the tutorial suggested

k9t33n

thats a bad sd card

k9t33n

try reformatt it, you can do this in the imager by going using "erase" instead of an os

k9t33n

do this then reflash it with raspi os 32 bit

gabrielkazansky

i said it above the image that this is what the raspberri produces with no sd card

gabrielkazansky

New phenomenon...

gabrielkazansky

When I plugged it in this time it got a bit farther, seen some random blinks on the green led

gabrielkazansky

Then this

gabrielkazansky

gabrielkazansky

Now I got what it originally does

gabrielkazansky

k9t33n

try reformatting anyway

k9t33n

it's a general solution that can do a lot

k9t33n

if that doesn't work then try a usb stick

gabrielkazansky

reformatted..now it doesnt find the kernel image...

k9t33n

have you put the kernel image back on after you reformatted?

gabrielkazansky

just gave the command to the imager to image again

k9t33n

ok after that try a usb if you have one

oops.se

That SD card has all signs of a BAD SD-card.

gabrielkazansky

bad sd card?

gabrielkazansky

i just bought the damn thing

jannik44

thats no warranty to anything, depending on where you bought it it was crap from the beginning (for example aliexpress)

gabrielkazansky

i bought it from a hungarian big box store Media Markt

gabrielkazansky

also i tried to insert the sd card when it was running and complaining that it doesnt have an sd card in it it tried to boot it...got to the welcome screen and got stuck

gabrielkazansky

also intresting note that every time when i tried to boot the sd card image i got splash screens that were basically a rainbow mess then it got stuck on boot

gabrielkazansky

i dunno if its important

gabrielkazansky

mistery is somewhat solved

gabrielkazansky

found a super old and shitty pendrive....burned it with an image

gabrielkazansky

and it boots fine

gabrielkazansky

slow mind you because the pendrive is not a high quality but it boots

gabrielkazansky

it got me in so far as the setup where you select your country and region and keyboard layout

gabrielkazansky

its kinda stuck after that..prolly because it needs to write to the shitty pendrive and load gui from it

gabrielkazansky

i can move the mouse tho

gabrielkazansky

So I got it to fully set up with the crappy pendrive

gabrielkazansky

Its slow as molasses soaked in more molasses but it works

gabrielkazansky

what do you guys think, can it be the card slot or the card?

k9t33n

probs the card

gabrielkazansky

yup tried it with my usb card reader i get the same error stuck on the raspberry splash screen

gabrielkazansky

but funny enough on my big linux machine it registers ,reads fine tho

gabrielkazansky

and how can i make sure the next card i buy isnt crap

k9t33n

formatted to fat32?

gabrielkazansky

yup

gabrielkazansky

then imaged with the same image and imager as the crappy pendrive(that works)

k9t33n

i dont have any rules. just get from a trusted website. you can get preimaged sd cards from raspberry pi retailors if you really need to

gabrielkazansky

also, next time should i try buying a nice pendrive and run with that (higher chance of success?)

k9t33n

not sure

jannik44

S S D

gabrielkazansky

but how can i interface it with a pi?

jannik44

via pcie or via a sata to usb or nvme to usb

gabrielkazansky

ohhh

jannik44

a pendrive is basically the same as a micro sd card

gabrielkazansky

sorry i had a knucklehead moment i have an ssd in an usb enclosure 250gb...kinda overkill

gabrielkazansky

and it will be limited by the transfer speed of the usb cable and connection tho

jannik44

yes

jannik44

but comparing it to a microsd is ridiculous

gabrielkazansky

so its better?

k9t33n

yes

oops.se

5Gb/sec for USB3 that isn't a bottleneck...

gabrielkazansky

ok i will keep it in mind

gabrielkazansky

also i salvaged the sd card out of my mp3 player its a 32 gig one,it apparently likes it

gabrielkazansky

it imaged and booted fine
