Running headless on a raspberry pi4

im trying to learn how to use one of these but i cant for the life of me figure out how to get it to connect to my computer <:confusedblob:1053364681575776276>
for ssh?

get the ip in your routers config then type ssh <user>@<ip> in your computers terminal
what is the terminal for windows 10?
or my personal favourite, set a hostname in the imager and type ssh <hostname>.local in your computers terminal
press the windows button and type "cmd"

i dont think the pi would be connected to the network then

ssh works by your computer being connected to the same network as your pi
so both need to be conected to the same network for it to work

can i not use a direct connection for a local network?

Did you use Raspberry Pi Imager when you created the SD card?

In Imager there is a WiFi section where you can add SSID and Password.
Have you download Imager recently?

When you press NEXT you should get an question about adding user and adding Wi-Fi cfeddentials
And hostname
And you can also open it with a secret key press "Ctrl + Shift + X"
every site ive went to said to put "dtoverlay=dwc2" in the config and "modules-load=dwc2,g_ether" in the cmdline

No, Raspberry Pi 3 doesnt support that
Pi zero, Pi 4 and perhaps Pi 5, havent check that

If it isn't then you could get away with a hotspot running on your computer or the pi
