PiHole Problems.

February 7, 2024, 04:09

blazingbackup

Hello there. First time installing/using PiHole and i cant seem it get it to work. i Got it all installed and im in the GUI but im lost from here. not sure how to tell the devices to use the pis DNS. or even better if i could the router. any help would be awsome

k9t33n

first do you have a static IP?

oops.se

There are two ways. 1. In the network you probably have a DHCP server (probably in your "router") and that is offering IP addresses and DNS server configuration to your devices. So if you change the DNS server in your DHCP server to the IP of your PiHole then will every device get the new configuration. Note the new configuration will be active after that the DHCP lease time has expired or that you force a new configuration and that depends on the device OS. 2. You can manually specify the DNS server in each device. I don't recommend this more than for testing. - Does your PiHole have a static IP adr? - What OS do PiHole have? - What OS do you have on your devices? - Do you have access to configure your router?

blazingbackup

Does your PiHole have a static IP adr? No i didnt see where to do that on my router config. What OS do PiHole have? Raspbian 32bit lite What OS do you have on your devices? Windows 10 Do you have access to configure your router? Yes, its an xfinity router.

blazingbackup

i was gonna be setting up the PiVPN after this aswell

blazingbackup

and i definitely wanna do it with the router, not for each device

oops.se

Post the output of cat /etc/os-release

blazingbackup

sorry, not sure what that is or where

_krazy.

run that command in terminal then send its result here.

k9t33n

the terminal should be the >_ looking icon in the bar at the top left

blazingbackup

In the pihole gui?

blazingbackup

Or I can just use ssh I thought

k9t33n

yes ssh

k9t33n

ssh is just the remote terminal

k9t33n

so just paste this in ssh

blazingbackup

Ok got it.going to my Pc now

blazingbackup

I have only ever used my raspberry pies for octoprint

blazingbackup

So a lot of this stuff is new to me

blazingbackup

VERSION="11 (bullseye)" VERSION_CODENAME=bullseye ID=raspbian ID_LIKE=debian HOME_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/" SUPPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianForums" BUG_REPORT_URL="http://www.raspbi

blazingbackup

sorry didnt see the first one i pasted for some reason

blazingbackup

i can share my screen if its ok. you dont have to talk and i wont either if you wont want me to

k9t33n

which pi is this again?

blazingbackup

it is also a Rpi0w

k9t33n

pi 4?

blazingbackup

lol noo

blazingbackup

i cant think of any other use for this l

k9t33n

you said you have access to your router interface?

blazingbackup

yeah im looking at it rn

k9t33n

ok look for you ip scope and the current connected addresses

blazingbackup

scope?

k9t33n

I can't give you exact instructions on this since every router interface is wildly and annoyingly different

blazingbackup

k9t33n

its the range of IP address your router hands out to other devices. when you pick a static IP address you want it to be outside of this scope to prevent conflict with other devices

blazingbackup

this maybe?

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

it says remote management hto

k9t33n

yes

k9t33n

it should not be empty

k9t33n

oh, idk then

blazingbackup

port triggering?

k9t33n

like I said every router interface is annoyingly different. to the point I would never be able to give you instructions

k9t33n

no shouldn't be that

blazingbackup

could i just share my screen for a sec?

oops.se

The picture is for remote access filter for your router, DONT CHANGE THAT!

oops.se

Look up a manual/pdf for your router and post the link here

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

this is the router hardware info

k9t33n

this would be extremely useful

blazingbackup

oo hang on

blazingbackup

this looks like somthing

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

beggining addy and ending?

k9t33n

that's ipv6, find ipv4

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

so 253?

blazingbackup

i could do anything after 10.0.0.253?

oops.se

Change 253 to 199

k9t33n

big scope

oops.se

Yes, 2-253 = 251 devices

blazingbackup

lmao

k9t33n

yup, then once you change it look at your connected devices

blazingbackup

wtf does xfinity think im doing

blazingbackup

will that change any of my local IPs?

k9t33n

check your other IPS first actually just to make sure

blazingbackup

all are below 199

k9t33n

good

k9t33n

then you can change it fine

blazingbackup

oh no

blazingbackup

10.0.0.243

blazingbackup

yeah

blazingbackup

243 is the highest

blazingbackup

8 devices total 2 are phones

k9t33n

Change it to 245 instead of 199

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

like this

oops.se

199!

blazingbackup

umm

blazingbackup

lol your both saying something diff

blazingbackup

who do i listen to!?!?

oops.se

Me

oops.se

I propose a even number easier to remember and you free up a bigger scoop for static IPs

blazingbackup

the only device above 199 is her stupid google home spy thing

oops.se

And if 197 devices to small for you ?

blazingbackup

the google home thing will just get a new ip right>

oops.se

Yes, after the lease time has expired, max 2 days

blazingbackup

ehh idc fuck that thing i hope it dosnt tbh

k9t33n

I said something different to prevent that device changing IPS??

oops.se

Just avoid the google devices IP for 2 days

k9t33n

we can make it 244

blazingbackup

oh? so i gotta wait 2 days before the pihole will work?

blazingbackup

can i just change the lease time here?

k9t33n

no

blazingbackup

oh ok then

blazingbackup

well its done 199 saved

k9t33n

2 days absolutely maximum if you set this until the Google home works

k9t33n

likely not 2 days tho

blazingbackup

so now what? setting static IP?

blazingbackup

google home already got a new IP

oops.se

Different DHCP client asks to renew the IP after something like 50 to 75% of the leasetime, different DHCP servers has different values

oops.se

Yes, now you have free up some space

blazingbackup

ohhh um? it says TheHole has reserved IP

k9t33n

yes, anything like 200 or something

blazingbackup

so just edit it above 199

blazingbackup

ok

k9t33n

something in between 200-253 I would say

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

what about config?

blazingbackup

reserved IP is the same as static ip right?

k9t33n

I think so

k9t33n

yes

k9t33n

don't set it to 15

blazingbackup

thats what it WAS at

oops.se

set it to 10.0.0.200

blazingbackup

also, when i set up the pihold/vpn it asked about what IP im using

blazingbackup

can i change that:?

blazingbackup

without reinstalling?

oops.se

Yes

blazingbackup

ok i did 201

k9t33n

great

oops.se

<@1071178789939331253> knows the menu

k9t33n

yes

blazingbackup

uhhh oo

oops.se

you can use to config IP on PiHole

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

wont let me

k9t33n

oh no that's an annoying part of your router

blazingbackup

ohh nvm its just telling me

oops.se

A reservation must be in the scoop, 200 is outside

k9t33n

oh ok good

oops.se

You dont need to bother with reservation

blazingbackup

i think

blazingbackup

let me try to refresh

k9t33n

they're isn't a selection for static IP

blazingbackup

dammit

blazingbackup

nope

k9t33n

.

blazingbackup

it wont let me save

oops.se

Skip editing the device, let it be

oops.se

You cant use it in that way

k9t33n

<@796000224690307072> can you use nmcli or nmgui on bullseye?

oops.se

Yes

k9t33n

you can't use it without a static ip

k9t33n

well you can but I wouldnt suggest it

oops.se

If you switch network manager with `raspi-config

k9t33n

great could you lead him through that?

oops.se

Ok

k9t33n

it'd be better than the router config

oops.se

Head over to your PiHole

oops.se

and type sudo raspi-config

oops.se

And then select "Advanced Options"

oops.se

Yes SSH or the terminal

blazingbackup

ok

blazingbackup

im in it

oops.se

sudo raspi-config Select Advanced Options Select Network Config Select NetworkManager

blazingbackup

do advanced settings?

blazingbackup

after network manager nothing poped back up

oops.se

It will take a second or two

oops.se

And then you get a verification and a Reboot

k9t33n

is it preinstalled?

blazingbackup

k9t33n

that's good

oops.se

You can soon reconnect

k9t33n

it means the reboot worked

oops.se

Yes

blazingbackup

ohh ok

blazingbackup

i thought i needed to change some settings

k9t33n

no

k9t33n

reconnect when you can

blazingbackup

nothing yet

k9t33n

the pi zero might take a minute

k9t33n

if it takes longer than 2-3 mins then tell us

blazingbackup

yeah thats what i thought

blazingbackup

ok ill stop trying for 2 mins

blazingbackup

green light just staying solid

oops.se

Yes, take a "Swedish fika paus" 😉

k9t33n

that's good, it's booting

blazingbackup

still nothing, i dont see it on connected devices either

oops.se

Mine when into "emergency mode" I have connected a display

blazingbackup

oh it blinked

oops.se

can you connect a display/keyboard?

blazingbackup

not really no

blazingbackup

dammit

k9t33n

it would be extremely useful if you could attempt to find a display

oops.se

i disconnect the power and ... waiting for it to boot

k9t33n

like a tv

blazingbackup

i mean i have a display but im afraid to move it

blazingbackup

the wire is janky AF

k9t33n

move the pi?

blazingbackup

do i NEED a keyboard to?

oops.se

press "Enter"

blazingbackup

ok one sec let me get that stuupid mini hdmi adapter

oops.se

oops.se

And there it is stucked in a loop

oops.se

This was the first time I tried to switch to NetworkManager

blazingbackup

ok im in

oops.se

Nice

blazingbackup

it wants the login

k9t33n

your username and password

oops.se

I need to reimage my SD card

k9t33n

oh

blazingbackup

i cant type

blazingbackup

its just screen...

k9t33n

does the pi zero have usb?

oops.se

USB micro

k9t33n

ohh

blazingbackup

and no

blazingbackup

i dont have one

k9t33n

try another usb micro slot if it has one

k9t33n

no usb at all on the zero?

blazingbackup

theres 1 for power and one for USB

oops.se

Whats the message on the display, is it "login" ?

blazingbackup

both mini

oops.se

Micro

k9t33n

it should display a few logs above, check if one contains anything about WiFi or anything

oops.se

And there is USB hubs or USB OTG that can be used to connect a USB A (keyboard) to the USB micro

blazingbackup

k9t33n

im looking to see it it's working again so you can SSH

oops.se

SSH to .15

blazingbackup

thats what i been doing

oops.se

Try now

k9t33n

try it now

blazingbackup

nothing..

blazingbackup

same thing

blazingbackup

timed out

thunder07337

Then it has been assigned a different IP, check the router.

blazingbackup

i did that to

blazingbackup

its not showing up at all on router

k9t33n

strange. try a different keyboard now

blazingbackup

what?

k9t33n

so we can debug that way

oops.se

Look at the picture!

blazingbackup

i cant plug a keyboard into it

blazingbackup

should i just reflash it...

oops.se

The picture say 10.0.0.15

blazingbackup

yes i see

blazingbackup

its always been that

oops.se

And then you should be able to ssh to 10.0.0.15

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

not on device list in router gui

blazingbackup

here ill even check on my phone

blazingbackup

nope

k9t33n

this is very weird

blazingbackup

and when i try to get on the pihole gui

blazingbackup

oops.se

Start from scratch and do one thing at a time 1. Get static IP working 2. Get PiHole installed

blazingbackup

maybe router reset?

k9t33n

I wouldn't suggest it

k9t33n

do this with a fresh image

blazingbackup

ok.

blazingbackup

no

blazingbackup

but wait

blazingbackup

we couldnt get the static ip

oops.se

well this time we dont go the NetworkManager route but the classic route

blazingbackup

ok flashing now

blazingbackup

and when we start should ihave monitor plugged to

blazingbackup

so we can see wtf is going on

k9t33n

yes

k9t33n

that'd be very helpful

blazingbackup

i did have an adapter... micro usb to femal e

oops.se

That is always a nice thing to have. I have flashed Pis 100th of times so Im confident that mine process is working

blazingbackup

but i took the 5v pin out

k9t33n

that be good

blazingbackup

i also dont think my SD cards are good at all

k9t33n

what you desoldered it??

k9t33n

no sd cards are good

k9t33n

that's why I made the move to SSDs always a smart decision

blazingbackup

thats the plan if microcenter ever get the pi5

k9t33n

I mean it's not great but you can get a SSD to micro usb adapter

blazingbackup

im sure you guys know about the 9.999.99$ pis

oops.se

No

blazingbackup

if you buy more than 1 they are 10k

oops.se

I have bought more than 1000 over the years (Have used them professional in a network environment)

k9t33n

1000 pis?

blazingbackup

oops.se

Yaiks

blazingbackup

FUCKK YOUUU SCALPERS!@!!!!

blazingbackup

70% on verifying

blazingbackup

ok booting

blazingbackup

ok logging in

blazingbackup

or not...

blazingbackup

ohh

blazingbackup

it wasnt done...

oops.se

Run
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

blazingbackup

i actually atleast do know that!

oops.se

Sorry, Im beginning to be a bit tired

blazingbackup

it says its start WLAN

blazingbackup

or Configuring it

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

its done,.

blazingbackup

and nothing

oops.se

Please use your camera in landscape mode

blazingbackup

this phone sucks so bad. and im just making it worse

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

it wont hold a focus

blazingbackup

its not on the router gui either again

oops.se

The Zero is slow, and the WiFi is the last part in the startup

blazingbackup

it says finished tho

blazingbackup

yueah it never took this long before

k9t33n

the first boot is always the longest

blazingbackup

nahh something is for sure wrong..

blazingbackup

ill wait but i really think something went wrong

k9t33n

this is a fresh image right?

oops.se

Now it is, 4-5 up to 7-8 minutes, but you are far past that

blazingbackup

i formatted it and flashed it

k9t33n

formatted with the imager?

oops.se

You don't need to format it, it only adds to the wear on the SD card

blazingbackup

yes

blazingbackup

i used pi imager

blazingbackup

and my only other SD card im pretty sure is one of the fake ones that over writes it self

blazingbackup

so idk the real capacity

blazingbackup

besides 2 other ones i have deemed as dead

blazingbackup

im flashing the knock off one...

oops.se

From first boot to up and running for a Raspberry Pi 1B took 3 minutes

k9t33n

it solves problems sometimes tho

k9t33n

i usually just copy a massive file onto it and see where it fails

blazingbackup

well maybe it is real because

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

it changed as soon as i took the pic

oops.se

I uses a SD card tester that makes test in deepth

oops.se

Thats the first step

blazingbackup

it took WAYYY longer to do the storage thingthing

blazingbackup

before this it was doing something with the storage

blazingbackup

SO!? how much do you guys hate me right now?

oops.se

Not at all!

k9t33n

yes thats a good way too

oops.se

I recommend you to buy a quality SD card 😉

blazingbackup

yes.... no more microcenter ones

k9t33n

your very nice to help compared to some people around here sometimes

blazingbackup

this is bad

k9t33n

so for that i am greatfull and dont hate you at all. the main thing is that you listen

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

i think

blazingbackup

it keeeeeeeeps going

k9t33n

what does that say?

oops.se

<@1146306062476128278> Your attitude is nice, and thats why are helping you

blazingbackup

end kernal panic

blazingbackup

unable to mount root fs unkownblock

k9t33n

oh no

k9t33n

that bad

oops.se

Bad SD card

blazingbackup

k9t33n

i suggest a quality sd card as mentioned. you can get ones that are flashed for you if you want so you know it works

blazingbackup

and BAD CAM

blazingbackup

well luckly i started the other sd flash awhile ago

oops.se

And you know all bad things comes in 3

blazingbackup

84%

k9t33n

whats the 3rd?

blazingbackup

the cam

blazingbackup

hopegully

oops.se

The cam was the second

oops.se

The first the SD card

k9t33n

yeah?

k9t33n

oh no

blazingbackup

there

blazingbackup

i just stub my toe

blazingbackup

3

oops.se

Check!

blazingbackup

that SD card came with a 3D printer i bought

k9t33n

bad one or good one?

blazingbackup

MOST 3fd printers cant use anything more than 32? or 64? i forgot

blazingbackup

thats how i know it was crap

blazingbackup

the printer?

k9t33n

32 what?

blazingbackup

its been great

blazingbackup

32gb

k9t33n

oh yeah thats fine for pi tho

blazingbackup

yeah

blazingbackup

but im saying i knew the card was fake because of that

oops.se

An advice, Raspberry Pi wear on the SD cards and when you use it with PiHole, that logs a lot it wears faster

oops.se

And this is because every memory cell have a limited amount of write operations they can withstand before failing

k9t33n

you can turn of logging on pihole

blazingbackup

wow

k9t33n

something I might do actually because pihole is logging to my sd card currently

blazingbackup

that wasnt even 2 mins

blazingbackup

to boot with normal sd

k9t33n

it booted?

oops.se

And disable swap is something I also do

blazingbackup

oh that was the first one

blazingbackup

it said login

blazingbackup

but then started doing things again

oops.se

First run is First boot Reboot Second boot

blazingbackup

well

blazingbackup

lets see

blazingbackup

we are where we were before

oops.se

Amongst other it resize the SD card to use the full size

oops.se

It it doesn't boot now, I will close this until you have bought a quality SD card...

blazingbackup

and this is on the SD card i i used before

blazingbackup

o well. say i do get it working

blazingbackup

what shoulld i do

oops.se

1. Static IP 2. Install PiHole

blazingbackup

yeah its screwd i think... thank you for trying

blazingbackup

um wowww

blazingbackup

i unplugged it

blazingbackup

plugged it back in

blazingbackup

and im in

blazingbackup

ssh and router gui

blazingbackup

like it was stuck on something

oops.se

If you have a windows machine you can download H2testw to test the SD cards with

blazingbackup

well its ok now

blazingbackup

but i understand if you guys had enough lol

k9t33n

no it's fine

blazingbackup

ok updating now

k9t33n

for a bit tho. we are deciding what's the best course of action for bullseye static IP addresses

oops.se

I will go offline noww, tired.

k9t33n

ok cya

k9t33n

I might actually have to go soon just because it's getting late. so now's the time <@1146306062476128278> if your have any more questions

blazingbackup

No

blazingbackup

Thank you for all the help though

k9t33n

np

blazingbackup

I didn't mean to send that picture

blazingbackup

I'm just going to get pie hole and pie VPN installed and then wait cuz I don't want to f* it up anymore

k9t33n

thanks for being easy to help

k9t33n

I suggest getting static IP before pihole

k9t33n

same with pi vpn

blazingbackup

Okay I'll try to figure that out

k9t33n

if your willing... this is your next course of action

blazingbackup

Okay I'll check it out

k9t33n

bye then

blazingbackup

Bye-bye or night night

blazingbackup

Got a quick question when you guys are around

blazingbackup

I have a 3B plus running a nass with an SD card is there any way I can swap the SD card for a USB without having to reinstall everything

blazingbackup

I know that pie is able to boot from USB without having to change any settings but I just don't want to have to transfer that much data back to it

thunder07337

With dd you can copy the SD card 1:1 to a USB stick. However, the USB stick should be slightly larger than the SD card. I don't know the exact values, but I'm sure Oops.se knows them. Or you can have a look on the Internet.

blazingbackup

it is bigger

blazingbackup

alot lol

blazingbackup

so you saying i can just shut it down. and literally copy and paste it over

blazingbackup

i did get an SD card working. but its so finiky if i breath on it it

thunder07337

Do not copy and paste! This is different. With dd, every single bit is copied, which is important because things that are otherwise not visible to us are also copied.

blazingbackup

sorry but what is DD?

blazingbackup

like cloning an SSD?

blazingbackup

i been using EaseUS Partition Master

blazingbackup

for cloning

blazingbackup

thunder07337

I don't know your program, but you have to decide for yourself what you want to use. https://manpages.debian.org/buster/coreutils/dd.1.en.html

blazingbackup

well what is DD

blazingbackup

is that the same as clone?

thunder07337

Since I don't use clone programs, I can't say if it's the same. And whether your program really copies everything important, such as partition tables, I can't say either. Just try it, you can delete the USB stick at any time.

blazingbackup

what does DD mean]

thunder07337

Everything on the SD card consists of millions of bits. And dd copies every single one of these bits exactly 1:1. It's best to wait for Oops, he can certainly explain this to you better or look up "copy operating system with dd" on the Internet.

k9t33n

pi 3b? no it can't you have to change something in the config

blazingbackup

btw my router can not change the DNS

blazingbackup

the have it locked.

k9t33n

ugh

blazingbackup

even when i change it on the device

blazingbackup

it wont

k9t33n

what? they can't change that I don't think

thunder07337

With Windows, Linux and Android, you can set DNS in the device. However, you should enter an alternative DNS in case your Pi is unavailable. It's just more work ^^

blazingbackup

Yeah you CAN. I have it set up with ipv4 but Comcast/Xfinity is using ipv6 to resolve

blazingbackup

Really trying to figure out. Work around but Comcast is stupid....

blazingbackup

Just like me

blazingbackup

I might just have to say screw it and only do the vpn.

blazingbackup

Or get a static IPv6 somehow...

blazingbackup

And I printed a nice little case for it to already...

blazingbackup

I'ma keep digging see what I can find

blazingbackup

Yeah

blazingbackup

so IPV4 ads are blocked but not 6

blazingbackup

screw comcast/xfinity

blazingbackup

Any idea where i change the PW for pihole

blazingbackup

<@796000224690307072> recommendations on good SD cards?

blazingbackup

or would i be able to use one of those SD ribbon cable adapters

blazingbackup

like these

blazingbackup

but not SD to SD

blazingbackup

SD to USB

oops.se

Yes, you can make an image of the SD-card and then transferer that to the USB storage. Follow this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY0xU4pVGeA

blazingbackup

but is there an adapter for things that wont let me use USB

oops.se

No, you need to program the OTP EEPROM to enable USB boot

blazingbackup

not with 3b+

blazingbackup

atleast i didnt have to

blazingbackup

with the regular 3b you do

oops.se

No, I buy well known brands

blazingbackup

well thats what i wanted to know

blazingbackup

what are some brands you had good experiences with

oops.se

I have just bad experiences with all SD cards as I have weared them out from logging and usage

oops.se

So I will not answer that question

blazingbackup

the pi 5 also supports USB out the box?

oops.se

Pi 4 and 5 can boot from USB by default

blazingbackup

lol so can 3b+

blazingbackup

3b no

oops.se

Pi 3+ needs the OTP to be programmed to enable USB boot

blazingbackup

If you have a Pi 3B+, then you shouldn't need to do anything as USB boot is already supported "out of the box". Only for a "standard" Pi 3B should you need to configure config. txt ...

blazingbackup

well idk then mine workd USB rright away

oops.se

With any previous models you can have /boot on a SD card and / on an USB storage

blazingbackup

alright, last oone.

blazingbackup

Whats the best class/fasteset SD card the pi can use

blazingbackup

or is that more of a SD card limitation

oops.se

I have no idea. I have seen several articles with different values.

blazingbackup

oh im stupid.

blazingbackup

that wont matter anymore when i get the new pis

blazingbackup

im just worried when i clone the SD to USB it wont know the location

oops.se

I uses 8,16 and 32GB as I know that they are safe

blazingbackup

it will think it should be in the SD slot

blazingbackup

welp we will find out!

blazingbackup

omg...

blazingbackup

well this drive is toast

blazingbackup

oops.se

When booting, Pi will look for a device with FAT partition, and when It finds one it will look for the files for starting. And the default boot order is SD, USB, Network

oops.se

Thats the sign of a fake drive

blazingbackup

no way... its from microcenter

blazingbackup

Inland

blazingbackup

they selling fake shit...

blazingbackup

i mean it was fre...

oops.se

I bought a 2TB SSD that I highly suspected to be fake (for testing purpose) and it was a fake
