Pi 4: Raspbian booting to commandline, instantly logs me out

I've been getting my brand new Raspberry Pi 4 set up, and I installed Raspbian on it. However, after rebooting, it now only boots to the commandline login instead of the desktop login... and when I type in my username and password, it seems to log-in, but then instantly boots me back to the same commandline. How can I go about troubleshooting this?

64 bit os desktop?

macrolotl

ah! uh, I think I might've just solved it?

macrolotl

I'm making sure

macrolotl

so, it's weird

macrolotl

I took out the SD card and plugged it into my PC to troubleshoot

macrolotl

and somehow, a lot of my installed packages got removed?

macrolotl

I imagine that one of those was something the desktop manager depends on

macrolotl

I'm glad that it's fixed now, but I'm a little worried that I don't know what caused it

macrolotl

uh, I'm not sure! I used the raspbian installer

k9t33n

interesting, Maybe just a randomly failed installation so I'm glad you've fixed it

k9t33n

anymore problems try reformatting the SD card with the imager, then try a different SD card and maybe even a usb

macrolotl

out of curiosiy, why did you ask about this?

k9t33n

just to make sure, I kinda wasn't sure if you've installed the desktop image properly

macrolotl

I see

macrolotl

ive kinda, moved on from Raspbian and I'm trying other OSes

macrolotl

but everything is giving me different issues

macrolotl

or, well, some of them turn out to just be retro-gaming exclusively

macrolotl

when I want to watch movies on this too

k9t33n

try this

k9t33n

with raspbian desktop
