Hi i'am new with a Raspberry and i want to do a projecto with raspberry. I would like to do something useful for home, like monitor network traffic. any ideas to do that? thank you

home assistant, pihole, pivpn. I could go on for a while

Alexa is great (-ish) but really doesn't go much further than turning on a light and is expensive

pivpn is a self hosted VPN that works nicely with pihole
and a Nas maybe

But I don't know how to set it up.
Can you access your internet router? If not, then forget about network trafic.
And as for home automation, you can control wall plugs from alexa and home assistant.

I prefers to choose plugs that you can change the firmware to an opensource version (ex. Tasmota).
And you can also add a "presence" detector, Raspberry Pi 4 has Bluetooth and then you can detect when you get home or when your earphone, smart watch or mobile with Bluetooth gets home 😉
