raspberry pi 4: under voltage detected

March 8, 2024, 18:22

luke_202

Is there any bypass to this? It’s stuck on my terminal and I can’t do anyrhing

luke_202

I know the best solution is to get an official charger but I really don’t have time to get one

luke_202

I’m using a USB boot and a keyboard and hdmi connected

luke_202

k9t33n

sorry but thats there for a reason

k9t33n

you dont have to get the official charger

lassevk

You don't need an "official" charger

lassevk

You just need one that is powerful enough

k9t33n

and for you pi4 you need one that supplies 5v 3a

lassevk

=15W

k9t33n

well no because that could mean its only 7.5v and 2 amps or something weird

lassevk

you're right

luke_202

Shitttt the one I got was 1A

k9t33n

i dont think thats gonna happen but still

k9t33n

yup

lassevk

but you're right, 5V, 3A is the mininum for model 4

k9t33n

look at the bottom of chargers in your house and just find one thats atleest 5v 2a, which would be a little low but might work if its atleest stable

k9t33n

oh and if you dont have one thats the full 3a try taking the keyboard out

luke_202

This is so complicated I spent 2 hours going around tryna buy a Microhdmi cable 💀💀

luke_202

Every time I get something I end up needing something else

lassevk

and if you're using a SSD as storage, you may be able to get by with 2A if you switch back to a micro SD card

lassevk

SSD draws more power as well

k9t33n

eventually itl click for you and itl all be simple to ya

luke_202

Wish I had the time it’s a comp sci project due Monday

k9t33n

you dont need much at all really, just a proper power supply and sd card

k9t33n

you dont actually need the microhdmi or anything

luke_202

?

k9t33n

ok lets do this quickly

k9t33n

its called a headless install, its what im running now and i dont have any gui and dont need to ever plug in a keyboard or hdmi cable

k9t33n

so first find a good power supply

k9t33n

go to a shop if you need to

k9t33n

i got mine from asda

luke_202

Got one

luke_202

I think

k9t33n

take a picture of the bottom

luke_202

Of the cable?

k9t33n

no the plug

luke_202

It’s 5V 3A

k9t33n

ok good

k9t33n

try use it

luke_202

I think I’m being trolled rn

luke_202

The monitor turns on then goes orange

k9t33n

does it show anything at all inbetween that?

luke_202

No

k9t33n

using an sd card?

luke_202

Nope I don’t have one with updated os

luke_202

Using a USB

k9t33n

ok and is your imager up to date?

luke_202

Yes

luke_202

My teacher gave me an SD card for a raspberry pi 2

luke_202

I don’t have any idea to update that so I bought a USB

k9t33n

hmm okay

luke_202

oh

luke_202

It’s working now on the welcome screen

luke_202

I hooked it up to my touchscreen

k9t33n

ignore that then

k9t33n

great ig

k9t33n

need anymore help?

luke_202

It’s just on a black screen rn

k9t33n

damn

k9t33n

ok lets go with my orriginal solution

luke_202

Before I got the undervoltage message I was in a cycle of the colored splash screen and being stuck on welcome screen

k9t33n

plug the usb into your computer, go in the imager and in the os section select "erase" which will reformatt your sd card

lassevk

hang on

luke_202

Reformats the usb?

lassevk

This part: "My teacher gave me an SD card"

lassevk

does the sd card contain anything beyond the basic raspberry OS?

luke_202

I have no idea

luke_202

Originally I was given a raspberry pi 2 with a microsb card which worked instantly

luke_202

But I’m upgrading to a 4 because of wifi and stuff

lassevk

hang on

k9t33n

oh yeah i see what your getting at

lassevk

you have a RPI2 that works with that sd card?

k9t33n

that sd card should just work with the pi 4

luke_202

The rpi2 I don’t have anymore I gave it back but kept the microsd card

luke_202

I thought it’d work for the.4 but it didn’t obv

k9t33n

oh ok then continue with reformatting

luke_202

Plug usb into pc and reformat that?

lassevk

From what I know, if you have an SD card with the OS for RPIx, then it should work just fine with RPIy (where y > x)

lassevk

it might not be the optimal OS version for that raspberry, but it should work

k9t33n

yes

luke_202

Ok

luke_202

Currently the issue is the screen is flashing and losing input signal

k9t33n

im onboard with ya

k9t33n

is it a gpio screen, ribbon cable screen or hdmi/usb?

luke_202

HDMI

lassevk

I'm just worried that the SD card contains more than just the stock OS, and might contain stuff "from the teacher"

luke_202

I’m using the monitor right now because the terminal is too small to read

k9t33n

hmm, well were not reformatting that so we can then access it later on

lassevk

oh, OK, I guess I read the conversation wrong then

luke_202

luke_202

do this?

k9t33n

yes

luke_202

ok

k9t33n

thats fine

luke_202

thank you for the help btw

luke_202

kinda panicking rn

k9t33n

np

k9t33n

and dont panick

luke_202

i only got my raspberry pi yesterday and this was meant to be a 3 month project due next week

luke_202

ok, it's erased

luke_202

ok

luke_202

I intend to connect to the pi using windows remote desktop connection

luke_202

do i need to enable ssh?

k9t33n

yes

luke_202

this will have a gui won't it?

luke_202

i won't just be looking at a terminal?

k9t33n

yes it will

k9t33n

32 bit desktop

luke_202

perfect

luke_202

tnx

luke_202

does the 64 bit not have one?

k9t33n

it does, only the "lite" versions dont have a gui

k9t33n

which is in the section below

k9t33n

i mean headless is the best anyway but dw i wouldnt enforce it on u

luke_202

yea i like gui's lmao

luke_202

i've written all the code for the project on windows already

luke_202

i'm praying it's as simple as transferring my files and connecting the led screen

k9t33n

this is linux, it likes to make you think a little bit more

k9t33n

dont get me wrong i love linux and daily drive it, but when your just getting started headaches are guaranteed

luke_202

yup

k9t33n

it done?

luke_202

nah

luke_202

22%

luke_202

it's slow

luke_202

cheap usb i ran to the store and bought

k9t33n

very slow

k9t33n

what's your sch project btw?

luke_202

Making an embedded system that contributes to wellbeing

luke_202

I’m doing music that helps people sleep and tracks when they sleep based off last input

k9t33n

oh ok

k9t33n

you definitely didn't need to upgrade to the pi 4 then

luke_202

Probably not

luke_202

I was having an issue installing Python libraries

luke_202

Couldn’t install pip because pi2 was pointing to a url that didn’t exist anymore

k9t33n

what was the error?

luke_202

Something with apt

k9t33n

that's not the pi 2s fault

luke_202

Yea probably mine

luke_202

But I don’t know what I’m doing lmao

k9t33n

no

k9t33n

a full update probably wouldve fixed it

luke_202

i went and had a shower came back it's on 49% of verifying

luke_202

hopefully don't need to do this again project will be due at that point

k9t33n

lol

luke_202

ok

luke_202

it's done

luke_202

so i can just

luke_202

plug the hdmi, usb and power into the pi

luke_202

and it'll work?

k9t33n

yes without keyboard too

luke_202

ok

luke_202

does it matter the port for usb?

k9t33n

try the blue ones first because they are faster but some usbs dont support it so if that doesnt work try the grey ones

luke_202

I’m on this now

luke_202

Last time it was on that forever

k9t33n

yeah because thats it loading the gpu which consumes the most power

k9t33n

and thats where it wasnt able to do so

luke_202

ok so i'll just wait a few

k9t33n

tell me if its taking about 2-3 minutes from now

luke_202

i plugged in the wrong cable they're all the same color 💀

luke_202

will it break anything if i unplug it

k9t33n

kinda

k9t33n

just do it anyway, i mean you have no other choice

luke_202

boots

luke_202

i'm on welcome to raspberry pi desktop

luke_202

i'll need the keyboard to get through won't it?

luke_202

the display turned itself off and now is gone back to the color screen

luke_202

<@1071178789939331253> it's been on the color screen for 5 mins

k9t33n

oh ok

k9t33n

weird it does that

luke_202

i took the power out again and put it back in, go tto welcome screen

k9t33n

i think the psu is unstable

luke_202

it ran a bunch of commands in the bottom left now the green led flash is gone on the pi and the screen is turning on and off

k9t33n

yup unstable psu

k9t33n

i dont know what to do tho

k9t33n

wait does it power cycle only when the keyboard is plugged in?

luke_202

keyboard isn't plugged in

k9t33n

oh ok

k9t33n

get a second opinion from one of the mods

k9t33n

<@&818389709134626826> what do you think? i think unstable psu but i dont want them to buy a new one only for the problem to still exist

luke_202

I took the power out again, should I let this run or plug keyboard in and ctrl alt f2?

luke_202

(Ignore dusty monitor took it out of storage from 2 years just for this)

k9t33n

so far weve reformatted and reflashed correctly, tried multiple chargers and this one supposedly has enough power but now its working for a second then kinda power cycling

k9t33n

keep it running

luke_202

Ok

luke_202

I think the issue starts once it finishes

luke_202

It changed screens a few times before it started losing signal

luke_202

On a blank terminal now

luke_202

This is all I see

luke_202

No idea what to do to get off this screen

illegitimate_egg

unstable or overloaded

luke_202

I’m in

luke_202

luke_202

I think/hope

luke_202

On a blank grey screen with a cursor that works

luke_202

So it’s progress

luke_202

I have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse I’ll set up whichll take weight off the psu

luke_202

It works

luke_202

God bless you K9T33n

k9t33n

power supply overloaded? I mean it apparently supplies 5v 3a

k9t33n

np, sorry I didn't help you on the last bit

illegitimate_egg

I thought it was 2A

k9t33n

old one was I think

illegitimate_egg

nvmd

illegitimate_egg

just sounds unstable then

luke_202

This is the same problem I had with the 2 😦

luke_202

Any fixes for these?

illegitimate_egg

you tried running apt update?

luke_202

I ran sudo apt-get install xrdp

luke_202

Yep

illegitimate_egg

hmm

luke_202

There was a warning wt the end of it tho

luke_202

I’ll run it again

k9t33n

anyway <@883019151327764531> if it happens again it's because the power supply is bad

k9t33n

try a different one

luke_202

luke_202

Hopefully I can avoid it

luke_202

I just need it working for 5 minute video

illegitimate_egg

can you ping a website like raspberrypi.com?

luke_202

Temporary failure in name resolution

illegitimate_egg

yeah

illegitimate_egg

is your pi actually connected to the internet?

lassevk

Considering you're showing photos of your RPI running on a monitor, it means you're not connecting to the RPI over your network. This means that it is entirely possible the RPI is not even properly connected to your local network, at all. Did you use a WIFI connection? Or did you plug in a network cable?

luke_202

Doesn’t look like iit

luke_202

I see the wifi up in my image

illegitimate_egg

can you run ip a?

lassevk

I would double-check the settings you have for your WIFI connection then. Unfortunately I do not know where to find those settings in X, but from a terminal you can run: sudo raspi-config You can then find the WIFI settings under "1 System Options"

luke_202

Probably very dumb to ask but where is the settings 😭

luke_202

illegitimate_egg

that's very interesting

illegitimate_egg

you are actually connected

illegitimate_egg

are you able to ping 8.8.8.8?

lassevk

How do you figure that?

illegitimate_egg

the adapter is up

luke_202

Network is unreachable

lassevk

but it's not showing an ip address

illegitimate_egg

huh

illegitimate_egg

it is

illegitimate_egg

it's ipv6

illegitimate_egg

though

illegitimate_egg

it's weird

illegitimate_egg

it should have an IPv4

illegitimate_egg

and parts of it are down

illegitimate_egg

it's kind of connected

lassevk

on my rpi, "ip a" ,shows: 2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP group default qlen 1000 link/ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.0.192/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global dynamic noprefixroute eth0 valid_lft 69975sec preferred_lft 69975sec inet6 xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:b06/64 scope global dynamic noprefixroute valid_lft 1680sec preferred_lft 1680sec inet6 fe80::1f92:c03:95ba:88c7/64 scope link noprefixroute valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

luke_202

I have to go now though and I won’t be on til tomorrow. Will try again then if this channel can stay open

illegitimate_egg

The NO-CARRIER at the start would mean that it's up but still not connected

illegitimate_egg

which feels really strange because it's really hard to force an adapter to be up with no carrier

luke_202

man i'm being trolled frfr

luke_202

i bought a 3A usb-c and it first gave a low voltage now it's stuck on colored screen

luke_202

this is funny it works now

luke_202

plugging keyboard in breaks it 💀

k9t33n

maybe it's something about the keyboard

k9t33n

the keyboard is probably taking too many amps

k9t33n

is it a cheap one maybe with rgb?

k9t33n

that wouldn't usually make the pi unstable but maybe if it's a cheap micro controller in it or something

luke_202

yep

luke_202

do you have any solutions to login via VNC?

k9t33n

yes

luke_202

I have the pi's IP

k9t33n

ssh working?

k9t33n

go in your computers command line and enter ssh <user>@<pis ip>

luke_202

connection timed out

k9t33n

for vnc or SSH?

luke_202

nvm i am actually just being stupid

luke_202

the PI isn't even turned on it crashed cus i tried the keyboard again

k9t33n

oh ok

luke_202

<@1071178789939331253> sry to ping but I managed to login via SSH

luke_202

What can I do to access the GUI remotely?

k9t33n

great

k9t33n

ok first enter sudo raspi-config

k9t33n

then go to interfaces and turn on vnc

luke_202

done

luke_202

what now?

luke_202

oops.se

Remote Desktop is NOT VNC. You need to install a VNC client software

luke_202

good point

luke_202

thank you!

k9t33n

Google vnc viewer

luke_202

I had realvnc installed already

luke_202

last thing(probably)

luke_202

how can I paste files onto it using vnc?

luke_202

i did ctrlc ctrlv didn't work

oops.se

Google file transfers with VNC

k9t33n

I use sftp but that doesn't work well on windows so forget this message

oops.se

I uses SSHFS (SSH File System) and it works verry well in linux and Windows

luke_202

installing xrdp since i have more experience using that

luke_202

which pins do i connect it too

k9t33n

k9t33n

gpio pins is where you connect stuff to your pi. they are on the left hand side (light facing you) and look like this

k9t33n

that's a horrible picture of my pi 5 but it looks the same

luke_202

what does it mean by mount?

luke_202

surely I can't just throw it on there 😭

k9t33n

yes and sometimes you screw it on

luke_202

oh

luke_202

ok

luke_202

what about the speakers?

luke_202

Is there a particular way to mount it?

luke_202

I put it on the gpio pins and the green light dissapeared so either power or i mounted it wrong?

k9t33n

take it off and see if the pi still works

luke_202

it does

luke_202

my power supply is finicky i think

luke_202

but i literally just need it working for a 5 minute video

k9t33n

hmm well you can't really expect a bad power supply to become good so you can take more power out of it then it gives

k9t33n

so find a better one that supplies 5v 3a. that's my only solution

luke_202

the one i have does

k9t33n

but is it a charger or power supply?

luke_202

charger

k9t33n

chargers aren't preferable because instead of delivering a constant power they can drop out every now and then

k9t33n

maybe you want to get a proper one

luke_202

what constitutes a power supply

luke_202

a batterypack that is usb-c?

luke_202

It may not be the power supply tho, it has been more stable recently. Originally it turned on 1/5 times but now it's doing it everytime

luke_202

how exactly should i mount the hdmi screen

k9t33n

has it come yet?

k9t33n

so you can send a pic?

luke_202

yep

luke_202

of the back?

luke_202

k9t33n

ok just put the gpio pins in line with the gray female Dupont connectors

k9t33n

luke_202

yeaaaaaaa

luke_202

i kinda just throught he middle black bit on it lmao

k9t33n

what?

luke_202

i was aligning the middle black square with the pins

k9t33n

oh

luke_202

uhh

luke_202

the pins are giving a power supply to the pi?

k9t33n

they could do that might explain why it's got a usb c port

k9t33n

is it power without gpio?

luke_202

yea

luke_202

so i should take the usb-c out of the screen?

luke_202

ok that stops both the pi and the screen turning on

luke_202

nvm...

luke_202

yea i'm kinda stuck here

luke_202

is it safe to have them both plugged in?

luke_202

neither supply alone is enough to power both

k9t33n

no that's fine Like that

k9t33n

depends. I wouldnt just leave the screen plugged in

luke_202

Problem is I need to because neither can power both

k9t33n

then you may try both yes

luke_202

luke_202

What about these for speakers?

k9t33n

never seen those used for speakers before. I expected them to be usb or audio jack. not sure look at the manual included

luke_202

Didn’t get one

luke_202

At least teacher didn’t pass it along

k9t33n

ok then ask him and your next job is to get a proper power supply like the official one

luke_202

yea i won't have time to get one as i need to record a video by friday

luke_202

but i have a new issue now..

luke_202

luke_202

how the hell did i do that 😭

luke_202

This entire system is trolling me

k9t33n

oh no

k9t33n

might need to reflash. you've done something to kinda shock the pi. possibly even brick it

luke_202

Nope

luke_202

I cut the power

luke_202

Turned it back on

luke_202

Worked fine

luke_202

I am literally being trolled

luke_202

The only thing I did tho was make make user via ssh and give it sudo

luke_202

It’s like I’m destined just to not get this project done

k9t33n

what was the project again? I have the memory of a goldfish

luke_202

Plays audio through a speaker to help people sleep

luke_202

I’ve gotten the code onto the pi

luke_202

I just need to install the packages

luke_202

Then figure out speaker and touchscreen

k9t33n

oh yeah

k9t33n

can you email the teacher?

k9t33n

we need to know wth he wants us to do with the speaker wires

luke_202

yea

luke_202

will do that

luke_202

Do you have a solution?

k9t33n

yes

k9t33n

one add sudo before apt install

luke_202

thank you!!

k9t33n

oh and for pip install you need a venv

luke_202

the sudo apt install python3-xyz will work the same no?

luke_202

I only have 2 non-default packages so I don't really need pip if that command works

k9t33n

should do

luke_202

yea if only i didn't buy the slowest USB stick possible lmao

luke_202

Question

luke_202

If I got my OS on a USB, and I erase my SD card and put it in the pi, can I copy the OS onto the sd card?

k9t33n

yes

luke_202

The SD card isn’t wiped actually

luke_202

It has a pi2 OS

luke_202

will it be an issue

k9t33n

you can reformat it with mkfs

k9t33n

run mkfs [device] -t ext4 if I remember correctly

k9t33n

and run lsblk to get the device name

luke_202

Uhh

luke_202

Can you help?

luke_202

luke_202

Sda1?

k9t33n

I have to assume so

k9t33n

luke_202

What’s the mmcblk?

k9t33n

no clue

luke_202

I think it’s that

luke_202

The Sd card is 8gb

k9t33n

just about to say

k9t33n

and what about the usb?

luke_202

32gb

k9t33n

big usb. never seen one of those before but that makes sense

luke_202

The file does not exist it says

luke_202

Do I do the individual directories?

luke_202

Nvm that doesn’t work either

luke_202

k9t33n

interesting

oops.se

DD will wipe your SD card, no need to format.

oops.se

Those commands will not work as the block device is /dev/mmc.... and as you post pictures of text I cant help you with the complete command.

luke_202

Thanks but I think I won’t bother now. Project is due tomorrow but I’ve finally got the Bluetooth keyboard to work so most issues should be solved

luke_202

Praying the program I wrote runs

k9t33n

I highly suggest you to do a test run because I can pretty much guarantee everything that could go wrong will... and more

luke_202

Oh I know

luke_202

But yea I am, biggest issue rn is that it's taking an average of 20mins to boot the pi. which is why i wanted to move os to sd card because the USB is what's slow

luke_202

but i only need it running for 5 mins..

luke_202

so wayvnc was idle using 35% of my cpu that is why it was so slow 💀

luke_202

This shit is genuinely just fucking with me

luke_202

The R key on my Bluetooth keyboard just stopped working

luke_202

Like what

k9t33n

lol

k9t33n

is it that cheap RGB one?

luke_202

no

luke_202

it's one of the good apple ones lmfao

luke_202

but anyway. fine. i'll just keep sshing everything

luke_202

I got my program on and running using winscp

luke_202

just need to connect a bluetooth speaker since apparently I need some kind of adapter for the speakers the teacher gave me

luke_202

unless you know wtf a jst-ph2.0 2pin cable is

k9t33n

never heard of it

luke_202

yea i'll just use a bluetooth one lmao

oops.se

WTF I don't know what that is, JST-PH is a connector type, 2.0 is the spacing between the pins (2.0 mm)

luke_202

Does it plug into a pi without needing anything extra?

oops.se
