I have been running RPI4 for a little over 3 years without an issue. I only have PI HOLE running on it. A couple of days ago it started to reboot itself over and over .. Any thoughts of what to do with it and fix it? I need to at least maybe recover the PI HOLE to important in some docker container

k9t33n

what do the logs say? let me find the filename for that

k9t33n

oop just got told you would need to turn on a specific feature which wouldnt work in our case

k9t33n

anyway, whats your power supply like? take a picture of the bottom

oops.se

A constant running PiHole without turning of logging, I would guess the SD card has faulty cells.

smokerson

It is an official power supply, I bought an official kit that included the board, power supply and SD card

k9t33n

just to be clear it does turn back on later?

smokerson

You mean an SD issue? Will it boot normally if I pull thr SD out?

k9t33n

if you pull the boot device out it wont work

k9t33n

youd need a secondary boot device, i run my server pi from an SSD because its more relliable for this exact reason

smokerson

I don't think I have an extra SD card

k9t33n

or usb would work

smokerson

When I boot it as is, LED light will flash, green LED flshes twice then reboots

smokerson

I think I have USB.. do I need to install something on it to test?

smokerson

I just realised this is my RPI3, not 4

k9t33n

is it the B model or base pi 3?

smokerson

B model

k9t33n

Then you can boot from usb

oops.se

Its the Raspberry Pi 3B+ that can boot from USB by default, Raspberry Pi 3B needs to be programmed to do it.

oops.se

So is it the + variant ?

k9t33n

Oh never mind

smokerson

It is RPI 3B

oops.se

Then you need to reprogram the OTP, check this out https://www.instructables.com/Booting-Raspberry-Pi-3-B-With-a-USB-Drive/

smokerson

Thanks But if this is the case, I lost the OS and I lost my PIHOLE anyway, right?

smokerson

If I cannot recover my PIHOLE, I will just get a new SD card and do a new installation.. I customzed my PIHOLE to fit my local network needs but unfrotnately I never backed it up.. it used to just....work

oops.se

The OTP programming gives you the ability to boot from USB and sometimes that can be beneficial. And backups is the most common "I wish I had done that" that I ever see.

k9t33n

Unfortunately your server does need maintenance so it can't just work. Which is what your seeing the effects of. Your problem is probably because of bad SD card reliability

smokerson

Yeah, it is a bummer
