Home Security System Components for Raspberry Pi

July 7, 2024, 19:44

arastotle

Need to know how I can get all the components

riothedev

welp

riothedev

back to it

riothedev

so basically

riothedev

u'll need a raspberry pi first of all

riothedev

and a camera for it

riothedev

obviously

arastotle

yes

arastotle

ill send the links

riothedev

the kit u sent isnt bad

arastotle

just wanna verify

arastotle

first 3 items from the list

arastotle

riothedev

unless u plan to use the pi 5 for more things other than that one simple security system

riothedev

i'd say its quite overpowered for it

arastotle

wdym

oops.se

You need to calculate the resistor value for the LED

arastotle

hmm

arastotle

these are all the items

arastotle

in the kit

riothedev

im saying that the pi 5 is quite expensive and powerful compared to other SBCs, for a project like this im pretty sure u could use a pi 4

riothedev

even a pi zero 2w probably

oops.se

A Pi Zero can easy do all task that a "Home security" needs

riothedev

yup

arastotle

nah i wanna use the pi 5 for lots of other things

arastotle

its like

riothedev

they tend to be around 15-20$

riothedev

ah

arastotle

buying a pi 4

arastotle

and then

arastotle

requiring a pi 5

arastotle

so then i have to buy both of them

arastotle

instea

arastotle

i can just buy the 5

arastotle

and go with that for a long time

arastotle

yknow

riothedev

i mean, what do u need that needs a pi 5 instead of a 4

riothedev

a pi 4 is quite powerful too

oops.se

You need to read more and wwrite less

arastotle

again, i wanna use it for millions of potential project ideas

arastotle

not just a permanent home security system

arastotle

people say that the 4 is slower compared to the 5

arastotle

mb, i know it can come off as irritating

arastotle

im brand new into this stuff

riothedev

welp, if u have the money for it and u plan to use it for lots of things, i dont see why not

arastotle

basically at the level of print ("hello world") if this were the python discord server

arastotle

yep

oops.se

Start to read the beginner in the faq section!

arastotle

bet

oops.se

I will not engage in this any more as it is a negative environment!

arastotle

idk whats up with him

riothedev

but if u want to learn to actually build ur own projects, i think that projects such as these are quite bad, they tell u what to get and tell u to run the code they give you. u'd learn way more and feel more accomplishment if u come up with an idea and make it urself

arastotle

you think the kit is good to go?

arastotle

yeah

arastotle

nah this is like

arastotle

a simple project that i make using what they tell me to do

arastotle

but

arastotle

on the long term side of things

arastotle

i plan to make my own projects

arastotle

but this is how i want to start

arastotle

see how i use the OS, how i can use all these components on the pi

arastotle

just to get a basic understanding of everything

riothedev

its fine but its just a lot of things that i doubt u'll need a lot of

arastotle

plus saying "i built a home security system using a raspberry pi" on my linkedin page would be sick lol

riothedev

like wires yea theyre important, but u can get them elsewhere too if u dont have enough

arastotle

yeah ik

arastotle

local electrician

riothedev

the kit doesnt include any buttons which will probably be very important for other projects

arastotle

oh damn

arastotle

didnt notice that

riothedev

the breadboard is nice

arastotle

yeah one of the reasons why this kit looks good to me

arastotle

the breadboard is included

riothedev

but i dont think u'll need these pins unless ure buying an unsoldered pi

arastotle

uhh

arastotle

what i am getting in an unsoldered pi right?

arastotle

this

arastotle

i dont want to deal with soldering

riothedev

u wont have to with that

arastotle

nice

riothedev

it has pins presoldered

arastotle

i see

arastotle

good stuff

arastotle

also

arastotle

there kinda are buttons

arastotle

but not the type you might be referring to

arastotle

riothedev

ah

riothedev

didnt see them

riothedev

yea those are buttons

arastotle

damn

riothedev

although small ones

arastotle

yeah they're tiny asf

arastotle

but as a starter

arastotle

you think its a good kit?

arastotle

this kit, the pi, the camera, and the motion detectors

riothedev

not bad i guess

riothedev

there are loads of other kits at similar price points

arastotle

true

riothedev

u can take a look at them and all the components they include and consider how useful they'd be for u in future projects

riothedev

just because a kit has a thousand leds and resistors doesnt mean it'll be useful for you

arastotle

lmao true

arastotle

yeah valid advice

arastotle

ty man

arastotle

sorry if i took your time

arastotle

just trying to work on projects from now

arastotle

to get a head start

riothedev

no its all good i like helping out

riothedev

personally i got a similar kit

riothedev

although it came with an arduino

arastotle

oh damn

riothedev

i didnt most of it

arastotle

yeah i watched a bunch of videos on arduino and raspberry pi i feel like ill go with the pi

riothedev

the most important parts were the buttons and the wires

arastotle

i dont rlly wanna build robots at this stage

riothedev

to me at least

arastotle

just mostly software based systems

riothedev

u can build robots with pis

arastotle

servers etc

arastotle

yessir

arastotle

w

riothedev

arduinos are way more underpowered than pis but theyre nicer for beginners

arastotle

yeah i heard

riothedev

the biggest advantage of pis are that in the end u can just use them as computers

arastotle

but the fact that i can use the pi as its own computer

arastotle

have an OS running on it

arastotle

thats crazy

riothedev

like running databases on it or some personal projects

arastotle

a hacker's toy

riothedev

yup

riothedev

quite fun

arastotle

fr

arastotle

ya think adding in a couple more breadboards would be good?

arastotle

so i dont remove everything

arastotle

from the breadboard

riothedev

well, my point is kits are nice but they tend to include things u dont need and dont include things u may want

arastotle

to build another project

arastotle

sort of like a lego set

arastotle

you use pieces to build a thing

arastotle

and u end up breaking it to build something else

arastotle

yeah i agree with this

riothedev

but theyre always a nice place to start as theyve got most of the basic stuff u may need to start learning

riothedev

u can just buy the extra components u need in the future seperately as they tend to be cheaper that way

arastotle

yessirrrr

riothedev

also i dont think its a good idea to keep finished projects on a breadboard

riothedev

whether u like soldering or not its a good idea to get a nice perfboard and wire it on all there

arastotle

why so

riothedev

takes up lots of space, its not nice to look at, and it gets messy very quickl

arastotle

whats a perfboard

arastotle

u solder onto it?

riothedev

and wires tend to unplug a lot

riothedev

thats a perfboard

riothedev

u solder onto it

riothedev

helps u make ur projects more permanent, smaller and durable

arastotle

crazy

arastotle

yeah itll work well on the long run

arastotle

w

riothedev

thats expensive tho i dont know why

arastotle

nah ill work on the perfboard stuff later

arastotle

just wanna experiment on the breadboard for now

riothedev

yea no dont need to buy that now

riothedev

thats for the future when u make a full project and want to make it permanent

arastotle

yes

riothedev

u'll be obviously using the breadboard during development

riothedev

welp

riothedev

gotta go

arastotle

nah nw

arastotle

tysm man

arastotle

been of great help

arastotle

actual legend

riothedev

if u got any more questions send em here and i'll reply tomorrow

arastotle

sure

arastotle

🙏
