Help with Installing GUI on Ubuntu server (24.04 LTS, Raspberry PI 5)

I got my first raspberry pi earlier this month and I am new to the hobby. I plan to use my PI with the usb c gadget functionality so I can connect it to my iPad pro and turn it into a "mini laptop" so I can work with ROS2, so far I managed to establish the ethernet connection but I haven't been able to install the GUI properly. I tried to use tigervnc and installed the ubuntu desktop minimal but the logs indicate that there are some problems with gnome I managed to create a vnc over ssh tunnel and the only thing I see is the white screen with the "Oh no! Something went wrong" message. I recently tried to install lightdm but it doesn't seem to work, the installation came with errors and I tried to fix it but it looks like it's just not compatible with my version. Has anyone managed to get the ubuntu 24.04 gui working on a Raspberry pi 5?

Yup, been struggling to find any recent documentation. I am real close to achieving it but there is one issue with xrdp

I am trying to use gnome desktop, there is a new feature for Remote Desktop but it’s not very good rn so I opted to use xrdp, at the time I’m writing this I managed to establish the connection but I can’t see anything, just a grey screen that looks like old tv static

So far I managed to establish a USBc gadget Ethernet connection to my iPad, installed gnome desktop and created an xrdp server

The RDP part is the only thing left for my Ubuntu setup to work

Does it have to be Ubuntu? Why don't you try the Raspberry Pi OS and VNC? This is already pre-installed with Raspberry Pi OS.

Start with a install with a full GUI. To add a GUI/Desktop can always be a challenge for a beginner.

Yup it was not easy, at the end I got the GUI working with a display, now I am having a problem with the RDP part because I want to use the pi headless

Maybe it helps to remove the background image or to reduce the quality of the surface. Have you tried different resolutions?

Well I tried with VNC and it didn't work so I switched to RDP

I am trying to use xrdp but if that doesn't work I'll try to use gnome remote desktop which is a new function

UPDATE: Apparently It can't get better than this atm. Hope this changes in the future
